Caps vs. Rangers... Epic?
(5/10/12) It was indeed an exciting game, as the Capitals stayed alive with a 2-1 win over the Rangers last night, but it was Ron MacLean's pregame intro prior to the puck-drop that was epic... as in epic fail.
The Twitterverse exploded after MacLean went off on an uncomfortable ramble about hockey players, 9/11, firefighters and the twin towers... pretty much every cliche that could be fit into one minute and nine seconds was there. Normally we stick to the fantasy hockey and leave the political commentary to others, but this one left us with a pretty bad taste in our mouths.
McLean even admits that "it's crazy to compare," but he immediately goes on to compare... and compare... and compare. Hockey players are like police officers, they are like firefighters? Yeah, no. We love you, Ron MacLean, but this time you were way off.
As for the game, it was low-scoring, but there were some notable stats for fantasy owners. Alex Ovechkin notched his fifth goal of the postseason and moved into the top 15 playoff scorers. It's the fourth consecutive year that Ovie has recorded at least five markers in the second season. Nicklas Backstrom also had a solid outing, chipping in a couple of helpers and moving into the top 20 himself. And we had another Mike Green sighting, as the struggling defenseman posted his second point in three games. Is it the start of something? It seems unlikely, and we don't think Green will ever return to the scoring pace of his earlier days, but perhaps it can be looked at as a step in the right direction. Jason Chimera had the other Capitals' goal.
On the other side, Marian Gaborik scored late for the Rangers to give Washington another last minute scare, but it was too little too late in the end. Derek Stepan and Dan Girardi had the assists. Check out the highlights...
