Downie and Landeskog Click
(2/25/12) With the acquisition of former Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steve Downie, the Avalanche have added scoring depth and now have the ability to roll two solid offensive lines. Downie is a former 20 goal scorer, and he's younger than you might think; this is only his 6th year in the NHL. In Colorado, Downie gets to play alongside breakout rookie Gabriel Landeskog, and on Friday the two clicked, setting each other up for a goal and both finishing with two points.
Saturday the chemistry continued, as Downie set up Landeskog for 2 more goals and scored another himself for a three point night. We don't expect this scoring binge to continue forever, but the two are definitely clicking and there is a very good chance they will continue to collect points down the stretch. Downie's addition could just take Landeskog all the way to the Calder Trophy.
Other Colorado weekend notes: David Jones had a nice game Friday, with 2G and 1A. Semyon Varlamov recorded the shutout. And on Saturday, Ryan O'Reilly assisted on 3 Avalanche goals, while Jones picked up a SHG and now has 3G and 2A in his last 3 games.
