Sabres Take Stranglehold on Playoff Berth

(3/28/12) The Sabres and Capitals came into Tuesday's matchup tied for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East, each having 84 points in 76 games played.

And... boom goes the dynamite.  Buffalo surged to a first period lead and never let off the gas, as they downed the Caps 5-1 in what might have been the biggest regular season game of the year thus far.  A few weeks ago it looked like the Sabres were polishing up the golf clubs, but suddenly they control their own destiny and are the favorites to secure the final playoff berth.  The fantasy producers were the usual suspects: Pominville scored, Stafford bagged a pair, and Thomas Vanek tallied his 25th goal of the season.

As for the Caps, WTF?  With only five games remaining, they sit on the outside looking in - unthinkable at the beginning of the year.  If they don't make it, is it time to blow up the roster and start from scratch?  It won't be easy to move the massive contracts of their superstars, but surely they have to do something.
