Standard Spin: It's a small step, but at least it's something. For the first time since suffering a setback in his concussion recovery Jan. 6, Capitals' star Nicklas Backstrom took to the ice Monday. According to CSNWashington.com, Backstrom skated lightly for about 5 minutes, while wearing a track suit and doing nothing strenuous. They speculate Backstrom will need a week of heavy practice before playing, and that his return might therefore come a few games after the All-star break.
It's a reasonable enough guess, but there's really no way of knowing when Backstrom will return. We agree that he still needs to get up to full speed, then be cleared for contact, and then get a couple of practices in, so 2-3 weeks would be about the best case scenario. (Jan.23)
