Tuesday Injury Update

(3/6/12) The big news today is of course that Sidney Crosby announced he is symptom free and cleared for contact.  He may return as early as Sunday, but that's an optimistic target.  Beyond that, the Pens play the Rangers next Thursday, Mar. 15.  We're purely speculating here, but that's the date we'd circle on the calendar.

The news for another Penguin with a concussion is not as good.  Kris Letang remains out and has yet to resume skating.  He was able to participate in light off-ice workouts today.

And another player back on the fantasy radar after a long absence is Habs D-man Andrei Markov.  He hasn't played this year, but he's finally cleared for contact and was on the ice for a full practice today.  There's no time-table for a return, but he could be back in game action in the next week or two.  It's a bit of a long-shot that he'll make a fantasy impact in the final month, but Markov is worth snagging for your final bench spot just in case.  When healthy, he's an elite offensive defenseman.

We also have an update on Tuukka Rask, and it's not good news.  He's out 4-6 weeks with a severe groin strain.  But hold on a minute... this is great news!  At least for Tim Thomas owners, it is.  We obviously never wish injury upon any player, but this does mean Thomas won't have Rask vulturing starts the rest of the way.

For the Flames, Mike Cammalleri is out for tonight's game with an undisclosed upper-body injury, which he apparently suffered Sunday against the Stars.  He's day-to-day going forward.  And teammate Blake Comeau is also out.  He'll miss a second straight game with a shoulder injury.

Zach Parise was slashed on his hand Sunday against the Isles and was sore after the game, but he said he's ready to play tonight against the Rangers.

And speaking of the Rangers, Ryan Callahan is probable tonight after missing the last three games with a bruised foot.

Another player expected to return tonight is Victor Hedman.  The Lightning defenseman has missed four games with an upper-body injury, but he's listed as probable against the Senators.

Detroit has a grab bag of injuries going into Tuesday's game against Philly.  No less than six players are expected to sit out - Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Bertuzzi, Howard, Kindl and Ericsson.  We can confirm that Datsyuk has resumed skating, but the status of the others has not changed since Monday's Injury Update.

Taylor Hall was listed as doubtful for last night's game with a shoulder injury, but he ended up playing anyway.  He didn't score, although he recorded eight shots, so it couldn't have bothered him too much.  He should be good to go tonight against the Sharks.

And we'll leave off with a couple of goalie updates.  Tomas Vokoun is back to 100%, but the Caps are expected to go with Neuvirth again tonight.  And the Stars are reportedly giving Kari Lehtonen a rest day against the Canucks.
