Update: Tuomo Ruutu Out 3-4 Weeks
Standard Spin: Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu underwent an MRI on Tuesday and is out 3-4 weeks with an upper body injury. We'll speculate it's his shoulder, as he suffered the injury when he was body-checked by Tomas Plekanec in Monday's game.
Ruutu has been the subject of rampant trade rumors over the last several weeks, and the injury is sure to affect his trade value with the deadline less than two weeks away. With that said, we feel that a move is still possible. First of all, Ruutu is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, which is the driving force behind the rumors in the first place. The injury doesn't change the fact that Carolina risks losing him for nothing if he hits the open market. They could decide to try to re-sign him, but they'll be compelled to take action one way or the other to ensure they get something in return. At the same time, Ruutu should be back by the beginning of March, so a team that brings him in would still have him for the important final month, and obviously for the playoffs. Ruutu can add an injection of offense to a contender, and his defensive skills and physical intensity are playoff traits that will no doubt have GMs trying to land his services. The injury uncertainty does throw a bit of a kink into any negotiations, but it doesn't necessarily mean a deal is off the table. (2/15/12)
