Jimmy Howard Practices But Doesn't Take Shots
Standard Spin: Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard is out for a third straight game after suffering a broken index finger February 2 in Vancouver. Initially it was thought Howard would only miss a couple of games, but the latest reports have him out 4-6 weeks.
Howard was able to "practice" Wednesday, although that didn't include taking any shots. He told the Detroit News afterward, "it'll all depend on the pain threshold and what I can and not withstand out there. Every single day the finger is getting better. One thing the doctor did say is that I'm lucky being young enough where the bone's going to go back faster... We'll take it here one day at a time and hopefully by the end of the week I'll be out there taking shots."
In the meantime, the Wings turned to Ty Conklin for exactly one period on Saturday, but he let in three goals. They then handed the keys to Joey MacDonald, who also started on Tuesday. Detroit lost both games, but MacDonald will get the start Wednesday, and he looks like the best handcuff for Howard owners. (2/8/12)
