Tyler Myers Coming On
(2/22/12) We predicted a big season for Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers this year. We even featured him as a sleeper in our pre-season draft guide, but mostly the Giant just continued napping. His struggles can be partly attributed to a broken wrist that cost him 19 games, but the fact is Myers was struggling before the injury. He was even benched for a game due to poor play, and last season's sophomore slump - he scored 48 points his rookie season but followed it with only 37 - seemed to last half way into this year.
Recently though, Myers is beginning to come on. He only managed seven points in his first 25 starts, but he now has a four game point scoring streak going, and has 10 points in his last 15 games. On Tuesday, he scored a goal, took five shots, and was plus-two in a 2-1 win over the Islanders.
We still like him for all the reasons we did coming into the year: he has freakish size, excellent mobility for a big man, quick hands, good instincts, and an ability to score goals. He's also available in almost half of Yahoo leagues, and we recommend picking him up if he's out there in yours. His numbers still aren't going to look great at the end of the season, but he's only 22 and we think he can climb back to the production of his rookie season eventually. Perhaps we're seeing the beginning of the ascent.
